Discovering Basilicata

Lagonegro (PZ): medieval village situated on a hill in a panoramic position on Mt. Sirino. Close to the ruins of the feudal castle is situated the church of St. Nicholas of Bari where, according to the legend, Monna Lisa is buried.
Lago Piccolo di Monticchio (Small Lake of Monticchio) (PZ): lake of volcanic origin, in the Rionero area in Vulture, whose waters are populated by water lilies and surrounded by a dense wood.
Metaponto (MT): archeological area with the remains of the ancient Greek city, including the temple of Apollo, dating back to the seventh century BC. and the ruins of Palatine Pables.
Melfi (PZ): a medieval city standing on the volcanic area on the northern slopes of Mt. Vulture. Today the castle houses the Melfese National Museum.
Other villages: Atella, Bernalda, Policoro, Rionero, Tricarico, Venosa.

Tastes and flavors in Basilicata

Filled ‘calzoncelli’: sweet ‘calzoni’ (turnovers) filled with chickpea cream, cocoa and sugar.
Lampascioni: wild onions with a slightly bitter flavor that grow spontaneously in uncultivated ground; often baked in the oven with potatoes and kid.
Pepper ‘mandorlata’: sweet and sour peppers dressed with almonds.
Sweet ravioli: ravioli with a ricotta, egg, sugar and cinnamon filling served with meat sauce and radish.
Wines: Aglianico del Vulture.

Handicrafts in Basilicata

Clay: the area is rich in clay, which is used in the production of high quality ceramics and terracottas.
Straw and wicker: woven covered and uncovered baskets (both large and small) and handbags.
Papier-mâché nativity scenes: true works of art, the papier-mâché nativity scenes reproduce the nativity, setting it in the historical ‘I Sassi’ quarters in Matera.
Tufa: production of small tables, lamps and sculptures inspired by motifs of the cultural-historical tradition.

Basilicata: events & exhibitions

Matera: July 2nd – Festival of the Madonna Bruna. After the procession accompanying the statue into the cathedral on a triumphal papier-mâché float, the float is destroyed by the exultant crowd.
Grancia: May to September - Grancia Park. The local people recount their own history. Hundreds among actors, horsemen and dancers, fireworks and special effects and images projected on the rock’s natural walls, give life to a unique event.
Potenza: the end of may - on the eve of the patron feast of St. Gerard of Piacenza – procession of the Turks. The costume parade starts from the cathedral and shows the legend in four living pictures.
Bernalda: August 31st - Festival of St. Bernardino. The image of St. Bernardino of Siena is carried through the streets of the town. The image is placed on a pole, which is passed around during the procession to the various participants, often leading to a ‘change’ in course.
