The first traces of human presence in Versilia came from the Neolithic era, when nomadic tribes inhabited the mountainous natural caves or those excavated by the sea. With the arrival of advanced Etruscan, Ligurian-Apuan but also Romans the coastal area has been reclamate and this area changes completely. These population construct houses, roads and little city those represent since now the real heart of Versilia civilization.
Then arrive th Lombards from the North which occupy the Roman settlements and gave to these territories a struictucture very similar to the current one. But the real historic turning point came in 1200 with the foundation of Pietrasanta and Camaiore followed by Viareggio in 1700.
The development of the Versilia coast in a touristic way began in the first half of 1800, with the birth of the first bathing settlement, and grew exponentially during the 1900s bringing the Versilia to be, even today, one of the most important cultural and tourist centers in Italy .
